Secretary Briones proposes extension of Gabay Guro celebration to reach teachers in regions

September 23, 2017

PASIG CITY, September 23, 2017 – As Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones honored teachers for their steadfast commitment and dedication to service, she expressed her desire that the 10th year celebration of Gabay Guro, the education arm and flagship project of PLDT-Smart Foundation, be also held in the regions for teachers who were unable to attend the festivity at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on September 17.

While the venue was full with approximately 20,000 teachers, the Education Secretary recognized those who were not able to witness what Gabay Guro had in store for them, “Sana minsan, i-hold natin ang ating Gabay Guro sa south, sa north, sa ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas para maabot natin ang iba pang mga teachers na hindi makarating ngayong hapon.

PLDT and SMART Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manny V. Pangilinan responded positively, and mentioned the possibility of carrying out a regional event during his welcome remarks.

Briones and Pangilinan both expressed their gratitude to teachers and emphasized that after all their hard work, they deserve this kind of tribute.

A decade of paying tribute
For ten years, Gabay Guro has been advocating the welfare and development of teachers all throughout the country by spearheading various trainings, scholarships, and livelihood programs. It also leads the construction of housing and educational facilities, as well as the computerization and “broadbanding” (equipping a facility with broadband connection for internet access) of schools and learning centers to further capacitate teachers in raising the Filipino learners.

On top of these projects, Gabay Guro prepares an annual grand tribute for teachers where the latter can break away from the cacophony of work even for just a day.

Star-studded performances, stellar prizes
Teachers did not have to spend thousands to buy tickets to the concert of their favorite performers. Gabay Guro gathered the country’s brightest stars in show business to entertain them on their special day, free of charge.

Thousands of teachers danced, sang, cheered, and applauded the production numbers by celebrities including Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera, Lea Salonga, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, Basil Valdez, Celeste Legaspi, Robin Padilla, Gabby Concepcion, Marian Rivera, Alden Richards, Maine Mendoza, Piolo Pascual, Toni Gonzaga, Gerald Anderson, and Kim Chiu.

Lucky teachers also brought home extravagant prizes including cash gifts, gadgets, vehicles, livelihood packages, two house-and-lots, and a trip for two to any Asian destination. Two schools were also awarded with generator sets.
