K to 3 Teachers Advances for the Literacy and Numeracy Program of DepEd Region I
City of San Fernando (La Union) – To further enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of primary school teachers and instructional leaders in early literacy and numeracy program, the Department of Education (DepEd) Region I conducted a ten day training on Multi-literacy and Numeracy held last August 17-26, 2015 at the Cozy Place Resort, Rosales, Pangasinan for Batch I and August 21-30, 2015 at the Presidents Hotel, Lingayen, Pangasinan for Batch 2.
The training aimed to improve reading and numeracy skills of Kinder to Grade 3 pupils, following K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum and establish a sustainable and cost-effective professional development system for teachers. It is also in line with one of the President’s Ten Point Basic Agenda which states that “every child should be a reader by Grade 1”.
Participants to this regional training were K to 3 teachers, School Heads, District and Division Supervisors from the 100 priority schools in Region I selected by the DepEd Central Office. The trainers were nationally trained on the specific program and they gave lectures and workshops on specific dates scheduled to them.
At the end of the training, trainees were able to assess their skills and their capacity on teaching early literacy and numeracy. They were able to come up with strategies on how to improve their skills as a result of the sharing and networking of ideas during the training.
Dir. Teresita M. Velasco continues to support and supervise the development of the program, giving attention to the trainees who will be in charge of mentoring the learning and experiences in their specific schools. Dir. Velasco lauded the trainers and trainees for making a big leap towards improving the capacity and the ability of educators in the region.
