The newly-created Palarong Bicol Board(PBB), after being tied-up in facilitating the events of the recently concluded regional athletic meet in Legazpi City, have already started the selection process of athletes who will represent Bicol for the upcoming 60th Palarong Pambansa in Antique comes April this year.

Deputy Secretary General Al Pelgone of the PBB revealed that the preliminary interview is underway for those athletes who qualified to be part of the regional delegation of Bicol for the National Meet.

“Immediately after the Palaro we asked all the tournament managers to send us the list of medalists as our reference for the selection. We interviewed some of them last Friday and our next step is to coordinate with the other winning coaches to proceed with the evaluation this coming week,” Pelgone said.

Pelgone further added that the composition of Bicol delegates will be selected based on the guidelines crafted by the Regional Screening and Accreditation Committee (RSAC) stating that all the winning teams for the Palarong Bicol shall represent the region for the Palarong Pambansa. Runner ups, however, shall be considered in case the selected athlete choose to withdraw his/ her name from the official list of delegate or when eligibility issues arise among the selected players.

Overall, there are more than 400 student athletes who will undergo the screening process based from submitted list of medalists by the different tournament managers.

Aside from selecting participants for the regular sports, DepED Region V is also preparing to send participants for the new demo sports that will be launched in this year’s Palarong Pambansa like Pencak Silat, Dance Sport and Aerobic Gymnastics.

The list of qualified athletes will be finalized in a conference meeting together with the winning coaches in February 17, 2016 before its submission to Palarong Bicol Board for approval.

Bicol Region along with 17 other regions will compete for the Palarong Pambansa 2017 come April 10- 16 in San Jose de Buenavista City of Antique province. (MKA/MMLJ)
