March 21, 2022 – The Department of Education (DepEd), through the External Partnerships Service (EPS), has distributed Brigada Pagbasa learning materials to supplement damaged self-learning modules of four Schools Division Offices in the Caraga Region.

The learning materials were printed and donated by LBC Express and LBC Foundation to support the Brigada Pagbasa program of the Department and the World Vision Foundation. The program aims to promote literacy and numeracy of learners through reading.

“Napakaganda po ng material na ito dahil ito po ay based sa Marungko na pwedeng gamitin ng mga bata. This will also help support the 3Bs goal of the curriculum, yung “Bawat Bata Bumabasa,” Director Carag explained.

According to the Rapid Assessment of Damages Report (RADaR), there were 5,343,650 damaged learning materials in Caraga Region with an estimated cost of Php 168M, this amount covers all grade levels and all subject areas for basic education.

During the visit last March 7 to 10, DepEd provided initial copies of Brigada Pagbasa learning materials for the Schools Division Office of Surigao Del Norte, Surigao City, Dinagat Island, and Siargao Island. The rest of the copies are underway to respective SDOs of the Caraga region.

The distributed materials are Marungko-based activity sheets for early grade school learners and can be used for practice reading and writing with their guardians at home.

“Sinusuportahan po natin yang 3Bs, dahil yan ang very basic na kailangan ng ating mga mag-aaral ngayon. Kaya kami po sa External Partnerships Service, katuwang ng World Vision dito, na talagang i-strengthen natin ang reading program ng DepEd nang sa gayon ay maiangat ang antas ng reading ng ating mga bata,” she added.

Meanwhile, DepEd Quick Response and Recovery Team (QRRT) members, headed by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS), visited the most affected schools in Caraga Region to verify the reported damages and further assess its immediate needs and capacity critical for learning continuity and early recovery.

Furthermore, EPS, through the leadership of Undersecretary Tonisito M.C. Umali, Esq., vows to continue coordinating with external partners for the possible provision of needed materials that will support the rehabilitation and recovery of Typhoon Odette-hit schools across the country.

“Ang ginagawa po namin, kami po ay kumakatok sa ating mga external partners. Nung nasalanta po itong lugar, si Usec. Umali po ay immediately nag-convene ng meeting sa mga partners natin. Ginather po ni Usec. Umali yung mga leads dito at nagresponde sila. Ito pong coordination ay atin lang pong itutuloy-tuloy,” Director Carag said.
