October 21, 2022 — The Department of Education (DepEd) met with education leaders in the 2022 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Education Sector Ministerial Meetings to discuss best practices in the education sector within other ASEAN member countries in Hanoi, Vietnam last October 11-14, 2022.
Led by the Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs and Partnerships Atty. Gerard L. Chan, International Cooperation Office (ICO) Director Margarita Consolacion C. Ballesteros, and Ms. Maribeth S. Chua, DepEd delegates met with their counterparts from other ASEAN member states in a bid to set the direction for the region’s education sector in the coming years, with strong consideration of building a more resilient education system and recovering from the learning loss caused by the pandemic.
Guided by the theme “Joint efforts to reimagine learning and building resilience of education systems in ASEAN and beyond in the new context,” the meeting discussed regional education issues, initiatives, and progress of the implementation of education action plans including the ASEAN Work Plan on Education (AWPE) 2021-2025. It also served as an opportunity for the ASEAN Member States (AMS) and dialogue partners to discuss possible areas of enhancing cooperation in education.
The ASEAN Education Sector’s Ministerial Meetings aim to address challenges and opportunities in education in the region through policy dialogue, coordination, and collaboration among AMS; and synergize efforts of the ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting (ASED) with that of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) on education issues and initiatives in the region and ensure that these concerns are integrated into national and regional agendas.
The annual regional meetings are composed of six ministerial meetings namely the 17th Senior Officials Meeting on Education (SOM-ED), the 12th ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials Meeting on Education (SOM-ED+3), the 7th East Asia Summit Senior Officials Meeting on Education (EAS SOM-ED) the 12th ASED, the 6th ASEAN Plus Three Education Ministers Meeting (APT EMM), and 6th East Asia Summit Education Ministers Meeting (EAS EMM).
