November 22, 2022 – The Department of Education – Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DepEd-DRRMS) will collaborate with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)’s University Library ALIVErary BOOKS Program to conduct the 6th National Climate Change Conference (NCCC) with the theme “Responding to Climate Change: Role of Education towards Climate Change Action”.
From November 23 to 25, 2022, the three-day conference aims to strengthen awareness and increase the participation of learners, the academic community, and DepEd personnel in climate change adaptation and mitigation interventions.
Featured activities will include two climate education webinars, namely, “Climate Change: Science, Impacts and Climate Actions” and “Librarian’s Perspective: Role of Libraries for Climate Change” on the first day.
On the other hand, climate action stories titled “Teachers as Leaders in Climate Crisis,” “Young Climate Changemakers: Human Interest Stories,” and the “Power of Schools for Climate Action” will be showcased on the second day.
Meanwhile, the third day of NCCC will exhibit a climate dialogue with experts on climate change and human rights to highlight the science of climate change, its relationship to disasters, the challenges, inspiration, learning experiences, and opportunities for climate empowerment and climate action.
Regularly conducted as support to the Republic Act 9729, otherwise known as the Climate Change Act of 2009, the NCCC provides among others the role of the DepEd in integrating climate change into the primary and secondary education curricula and/or subjects, such as but not limited to, science, biology, sibika, history, including textbooks, primers, and other educational materials, basic climate change principles and concepts.
In support of this Act, the UP Los Baños’ University Library, in collaboration with DepEd-DRRMS, advocates responding to climate change by building future-proof libraries, supporting the mission, and becoming involved in the dissemination of information and knowledge to communities.
The 6th NCCC will be held livestream via Zoom, official Facebook pages of DepEd Philippines, DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction Management Service, DepEd regions, and UPLB University Library; and DepEd Philippines’ YouTube.
