DO 53, s. 1994
Physical Education in Grades I and II
To: Undersecretaries and Assistant Secretaries
Bureau Directors, Regional Directors and Schools Superintendents
Directors of Services/Centers and Heads of Units
Heads of State Colleges and Universities
Heads of Private Schools, Colleges and Universities
- Physical Education in Grades I and II shall be taught daily for twenty (20) minutes beginning SY 1994-1995 in public elementary schools where Grades 1 and II teachers had undergone training in Physical Education and provided with the Teacher’s Guide and Resource Book in PE for Grades I and II. It shall continue to be taught as a component of Arts and Physical Education in Grades III to VI.
- The teaching of Physical Education in as early as pre-school has been a global practice. This practice was proven to have contributed significantly to the physical, mental and social development of the child. Since the early introduction of PE is more in consonance with the children’s physical development, needs and characteristics, it is believed that this will help make instruction in this subject area more effective.
- Regional PESS division supervisors together with the PE division supervisors who had undergone training in Grades I and II PE shall spearhead the orientation and training of other PE division supervisors, school administrators and Grades I and II teachers in their respective regions and/or divisions in collaboration with the Regional Elementary Education Division.
- Initially, the Bureau of Physical Education and School Sports (BPESS) will provide each school division with a set of the Teacher’s Guide and Resource Book in PE for Grades I and II. The regional and division offices may reproduce these materials chargeable against local funds to help accelerate the implementation of PE in Grades I and II.
- Physical Education shall be lifted as a separate additional subject in the class programs, cards and records of Grades I and II pupils in appropriate grading periods as soon as this subject area is taught in the schools.
- This Order shall take effect immediately. All previous DECS issuances inconsistent with this Order are hereby revoked and amended accordingly.
