NEGROS ORIENTAL, October 18, 2018 – Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones underscored anew the importance of cooperation and partnership with the local government unit (LGU) and the community in bringing to the ground the various programs and projects of the Department.
The Education chief highlighted this during the recent inauguration and turn-over ceremony of the Senior High School building of Bayawan National High School in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
“One of the most important secrets to success for a school and a school system is cooperation – that is the support coming from the LGU and the community… The Bayawan LGU and other cities and municipalities in the country have not failed in helping DepEd in the provision of quality basic education for our learners,” Briones stated.
She further asked the assistance of the teachers, school heads, and other partners in maintaining the newly constructed building: “We all know that every year, we face continuous demands for more classrooms to cater to new learners. I hope that you will take good care of this and treat this as your own homes.”
“When all of us work together, whatever our histories and backgrounds are, our goal must be to deliver the basic education our learners truly deserve – that is a legacy that we can give to them,” Briones concluded.
Also present at the event were DepEd Region VII Director Juliet Jeruta, Bayawan City Mayor Pryde Henry Teves, and other DepEd and LGU officials.

Saving Gabaldon
The Secretary, together with the engineers and personnel from the Office of Undersecretary for Administration, led the assessment of a Gabaldon building in North City Elementary School, Dumaguete City.
“We want to be more faithful as to how the Gabaldon buildings looked like when they were built. We have to come up with an honest-to-goodness and accurate historical restoration of these,” Briones expressed.
In her visit in Negros Oriental, the Education chief also graced the Investiture Ceremony of Siliman University’s 13th President – Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann – where she expressed her support to women holding key positions in the academe.
