Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City native wins bronze in handicraft competition in S. Korea
Grace Escrupolo was born with no hands and feet.
But the amputee from Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City said that disabilities did not hinder her from excelling in art.
Last September 2, her drawing depicting a family portrait where a young girl hugs her parents won first place during an Art Festival at the Cebu Provincial Capitol.
Her winning piece also won a bronze medal in the 14th International Handicraft Competition in South Korea.
On November 24, Escrupolo will leave for South Korea for a cultural exchange program and to receive her award. She will stay there until November 28.
“I am very happy with this kind of opportunity. You know, it’s Korea!” said the 24-year-old Escrupolo, who stood up through her knees as she was interviewed by the members of the media during a press conference yesterday.
Air Busan will shoulder the cost of her flights to South Korea and back, while the rest of her trip will be sponsored by Hannah Tours.
Escrupolo is studying in a Special Education center in Barangay Lipata, Minglanilla, southern Cebu.
When asked about her ultimate dream in life, she replied, “Anything as long as I can help my family.”
Dr. Juliet Jeruta, regional director of Department of Education in Central Visayas (Deped-7), said: “We want them to experience and show their talents and not feel rejected. We don’t want anyone to be left behind.”
Two other children with disabilities are also going to Korea.
They are Jane Marie Empemano, 15, from Barangay Inayagan, Naga City and Brent Jon Villanueva of Barangay Lawaan, Talisay City. Empemano, who has a hearing problem, excels in making flower handicraft, while Villanueva excels in origami.
Although their entries did not make it to the 14th International Handicraft Competition, they are still going to Korea for being the representatives of the country.
